Roles of miRNAs in HJSV-1 infection

Cokarić Brdovčak et al. (Viruses 2018). Host miR-138 targets herpes simplex virus 1 (HSV-1) ICP0 messenger RNA (mRNA) and promotes latency. A schematic representation of host-neuron-specific miR-138 regulating an important productive replication viral protein ICP0. miR-138 in association with RNA-induced silencing complex (RISC) binds to two microRNA (miRNA) target sites within the three prime untranslated region (3′UTR) of the HSV-1 ICP0 transcript, leading to decreased protein levels of ICP0, and reduced overall lytic gene expression to facilitate latency.
